National Association of Hispanic Publications Announces Winners of First Annual José Martí Awards
More than 700 nominations received, 35 publications receive awards
Las Vegas, NV--(The Hispanic PR Monitor)--April, 2006--The National Association of Hispanic Publications (NAHP), at its 21st Annual Conference announced the winners of the first annual José Martí Awards for Excellence in Publishing. Seven hundred forty (740) entries were received for 6 categories: Outstanding Publications; Outstanding Sections; Written Word; Design; Photos and Cartoons, and Marketing. Of the 740 nominations, 35 publications received awards.
A panel of Hispanic marketing veterans judged the entries in New York in February. The panel included: Nelson Fernandez of APCO Worldwide; Gloria Constanza of CMS Partners LLC; Michael Gomez of MasterCard; Angel Linares-Lugo of People en Español; Mindy Figueroa of Scholastic Entertainment; Gladys Rosa of Rosa Public Relations and Communications; and Terry Mireles of Vigo Remittance Corp. The judges met from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. reviewing all the entries and judging them on both style and content.
Lupita Colmanero, president of the NAHP, stated, “This year we saw publications both large and small competing for the same award, in the same category. Our publishers are all proud of their entries and the caliber of the writing, design and photographic skills displayed in those entries.” She added, “These awards demonstrate that our organization truly is the ‘leading word of Hispanic print’.”
The NAHP Conference was held in Las Vegas, NV, from March 29 to April 2. The National Association of Hispanic Publications is the preeminent organization representing the leading Hispanic publications in the United States. Founded in 1982, the NAHP represents newspapers and magazines with a combined readership of 20 million. This year the organization has reformulated its award process and named the awards after the renowned journalist, Cuban hero, poet and statesman, José Martí.
