This October Payless is helping make $2 Count for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research
Second Annual Taking Steps Brooch Program Launches Today in Stores and on Payless.com; 100 Percent of Net Profits from Brooch Sales Goes to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation; Company Hopes to Exceed Last Year’s Donation of More Than $500,000

Topeka, KS--(HISPANIC PR WIRE)--September 29, 2005--Payless ShoeSource, the nation’s leading specialty footwear retailer, will again launch its Taking Steps to Fight Breast Cancer program this Oct. to benefit breast cancer awareness and research. The retailer will sell an exclusive, limited-edition brooch for $2 in its stores and Payless.com and Payless will donate 100 percent of the net profits to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Last year, Payless shoppers bought more than 570,000 brooches, allowing Payless to donate more than half a million dollars to the Komen Foundation. This year, the company says it hopes to exceed last year’s results.

“Payless is really making $2 count this Oct.,” said Gaby Alban, Payless fashion expert. “Shoppers purchase a stylish brooch they can wear to show their support for breast cancer awareness, and we make their $2 investment work even harder by donating 100 percent of the profits from brooch sales to the Komen Foundation.

“At just $2, and available in nearly 4,600 Payless stores and on Payless.com, we are making it convenient, affordable and easy for shoppers to help fight a disease that is diagnosed every three minutes – about the time it takes to try on a pair of shoes.”

Like last year’s brooch, the 2005 Taking Steps design features the classic breast cancer awareness pink ribbon and a dangling shoe charm. This year the dangling shoe charm is a sling back heel embellished with pink stones. The brooches are available only while supplies last.

For more than 20 years, the Komen Foundation has been the largest private funder of breast cancer research and community outreach programs in the world.

“It provides a great sense of hope that year after year consumers are willing to give of themselves and help us work toward a cure for breast cancer,” said Cindy Schneible, vice president of cause-related marketing and sponsorship for the Komen Foundation. “We are proud to have the opportunity to partner with Payless to increase breast cancer awareness and allow shoe and accessory lovers nationwide to make a valuable contribution to breast cancer research and community outreach programs.”

According to Schnieble, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women of all ages and is second only to lung cancer in cancer deaths. She noted that in 2005, more than 211,000 women and men in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die from the disease.

To buy the Payless brooch, consumers can go to Payless stores or visit http://www.payless.com beginning today. Brooches are available only while supplies last.
