Miami, FL--(HISPANIC PR WIRE)--April 25, 2003--This year, Billboard and Telemundo join to celebrate the fifth anniversary of their joint production and broadcast of the Billboard Latin Music Awards. The combination of Billboard’s well-trusted and respected reputation in the music industry with Telemundo’s high production value, ratings and positive relationship with the artists has driven the event to unfold as the biggest night in Latin entertainment. The Awards will take place May 8th at the Miami Arena and will be broadcast on May 11 at 7PM ET/PT.

In 1999, Telemundo and Billboard joined for the first time to present the Billboard Latin Music Awards at Miami’s Tropigala. One year later, the exclusive event moved to the Jackie Gleason Theater in Miami Beach, and this year, the Awards will take place at the Miami Arena, opening its doors to the public for the very first time.

What began as a 2-hour show has now become a five-hour multi-million dollar original production. The special begins with a one-hour red-carpet pre-show titled “La Alfombra Roja de Billboard.” It’s then followed by the three-hour awards show titled “Premios Billboard de la Música Latina,” and it ends with a one-hour special featuring the after party “Billboard: La Fiesta.” Viewers and attendees to this year’s show can expect to see a majestic, dynamic and energetic musical extravaganza, set in an 85-foot mega stage, and featuring surprises in each of its performances from beginning to end.

Its reputation throughout the past five years, has also allowed the show to enjoy one of the greatest line-up of Latin superstars, with celebrities welcoming the opportunity to perform and/or make a special appearance during the awards. In 1999, the show featured six musical performances, a number that has since doubled for 2003. Currently, this year’s celebrity list includes Ricky Martin, Thalia, Chayanne, Eros Ramazzotti, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Grupo Limite, Pilar Montenegro, Intocable, Alexandre Pires, A.B. Quintanilla III & Kumbia Kings and David Bisbal as well as special guest stars Armando Manzanero and El General.

Besides its increase in size, its ratings have also shown exponential growth. During its first year, the Awards delivered 702,000 viewers. Today, it has become Telemundo’s highest-rated music special delivering a record 1.8 million viewers last year, equivalent to a 160% increase over its 1999 performance.

The roster of advertisers has also welcomed a positive impact with companies Burger King, Colgate-Palmolive, Heineken, American Airlines, Kraft/General Foods, Garnier, L’Oreal, Daimler Chrysler, Sears and Southwest Airlines supporting the show.

Distribution of the show has also grown. Today, in addition to the U.S., the special will also air in various countries including: Honduras, Panama, El Salvador, Chile, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Rumania and Canada.

Finally, the event has also gained tremendous media interest, having received more than 700 credential request applications last year (compared to about 100 in 1999), and expecting that number to rise this year. Although not everyone is accepted due to space limitations, the event is attended by all major media outlets providing local, national and international exposure.
