Noel Schajris, part of the group 'Sin Bandera' sings to his fans during a performance of Sesiones@AOL.
--(HISPANIC PR WIRE – CONTEXTO LATINO)--In an interview with ConTexto Latino during the taping of an installment of a private concert series for AOL Latino called "Sesiones @AOL," Sin Bandera answered our questions.
Why did you call this last album De Viaje (On a trip)?
Well, because life, life is a trip and we wanted to let people know, somehow, what our lives have become in the past few years. We've been traveling and traveling. And also, there's a song on the album that talks precisely about that. Life is a trip and each person is a different landscape. The best thing to do is find a person with whom to share that life journey.
Did your first album's great success become a source of pressure with this second one?
Yes. Everything that people gave us with the first album generated a little pressure with the second one, in the sense that there were already some expectations. When we recorded the first album, we were absolutely free to do basically anything, in terms of music. And when people gave us their support with the first one, the company started to have expectations. So we had to struggle with that a bit. They expected the second album to be like the first one and it was a bit difficult, but I think we managed to get rid of all that fear and focus onthe music. I believe that the results were good.
What was the source of inspiration for your songs 'Mientes También' (You also lie) and 'Te lloro' (I cry for you)?
Well, they are experiences we've lived. In the case of these two songs, they are Leo's experiences, specifically. And all the songs we do come out of conversations among friends: of what's happened to you or what you've lived or what you've seen. We adapt issues along the way. And well, we get together to write songs twice or three times a year and come up with what will be the material for the next album.
Some describe it as 'a life expression of romanticism,' but also say that many of the songs' lines speak about love and distance, such as 'Kilómetros, De viaje.'
Yes, distance has been a factor that has changed meanings with time. First, we had some long-distance experiences in which we stayed behind and the person we loved left, went far, as in the case of Kilómetros. In a relationship that both Noel and I had, someone moved to another country or a far away city, and then we tried to continue the relationship. But with time, it's us who leave now and that is why 'De Viaje' also touches on the issue of being far away from home. That distance is now about the struggle to hold on to your relationships with your partner and your friends, but also about us not being there. It's hard because you go back to a place where things keep happening and you become adapted again, and every time you go back, you must find out what those people are up to. That's why we talk about distance.
How did the name Sin Bandera (Without a Flag) come up?
The business people said suddenly, you want to do a duo. What are you going to call yourselves? We'd never thought of that small detail. because we just wanted to produce music. We hadn't thought about a concept, right? We started looking for one. We came up with a very long list, and we didn't like any of them. But we had been talking about common ground and in terms of what we were going to call it. We all thought and felt the same way; love is something that has to do with everybody in the world. All human beings can feel love, no matter the language, race, nationality. Music is also something that brings people together throughout the world. All human beings have the natural need for music: of listening to it, of expressing ourselves through it. Since those two things don't come under a single flag and it was basically what we wanted to express, what we felt, that's how the name Sin Bandera came up.
When was your first big chance, when you said, we've made it?
Well, the first big chance we got came from Ricardo Arjona. I remember it was a concert at the Plaza de Toros in Mexico. It was the end of his tour and through the company we talked about the possibility of opening for that concert of his. We were starting out. We didn't have musicians, Noel and I played the piano and guitar. And it was the first big chance and it was also the first big challenge. It seems like they threw us out there. There were a lot of people. I remember it was packed. Fans who go to see Ricardo are very loyal, people who love him very much, people who know all his songs. And so, without any warning, it was up to us to go out and sing three songs and feel for the first time what it's like to face the public. Thank God, we did very well. People treated us mercifully and clapped and they were very pleasant with us and it was very nice.
Well, and finally, how does it feel now that millions of people will be able to watch you play through Sesiones@ AOL?
Incredible. There is nothing we enjoy more than playing. We'd like everyone to see us play. We love for them to know about us, but more than anything else, to be able to offer our music to them and what better way than through this window to the world. We really have a good time. Yes, I believe it will be amazing. Thanks.
