The Commission, which is chaired former Citigroup Chairman, Richard Parsons and includes nationally-recognized education, community, and business leaders such as Randi Weingarten, President, American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO and John B. King, Jr., Commissioner of the New York State Education Department, will examine the current structure of the state's education system, including teacher recruitment and performance, student achievement, education funding and costs, parent and family engagement, problems facing high-need districts, and the best use of technology in the classroom. The Commission will also analyze the organization of school districts to ensure they are structured to meet the needs of New York's students while also respecting the taxpayer.
"It is a real honor to serve the students in the State of New York in this capacity and to contribute actionable ideas as part of this commission," Mr. Rodriguez said. "We are all inspired by Governor Cuomo's commitment to education and believe this commission is a critical first step toward realizing his goal of ensuring that New York students have the knowledge and the tools to compete and to thrive in this highly competitive global economy."
Jose Luis Rodriguez founded HITN in 1983, a non-profit organization with the purpose of advancing the educational, cultural, and socio-economic aspirations of the Hispanic community.
HITN's focus on education has grown to include cloud-based projects, like the new HITN Learning program, which begins its initial pilot phase this week and is designed to directly address the Common Core State Standards, providing students in grades 3-6 with the perfect online tool to practice English Language Arts, mathematics, and writing.
Just recently, HITN announced a new partnership with Connect to Compete, the global non-profit with a history of connecting low-income individuals to broadband and digital literacy training to promote broadband adoption and improve outcomes in disadvantaged communities.
