MIAMI, Feb. 19 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ -- Realizing the need to prepare youngsters as early as possible for a college education, St. Thomas University and the City of Miami, under Commissioner Tomas Regalado's lead, are hosting a College Affordability Day to provide parents and students with updated information on financing the kids' way to college and for those going back to school in view of unemployment.
With students from over 50 countries, St. Thomas University has a 39% Hispanic segment within its student population. In response to the shortage of Hispanics and other minorities who have completed baccalaureate degrees in science and math and the nation's need for future scientists, St. Thomas University established a new program -- the Science and Mathematics Fellows -- in August 2008 under the leadership of Dr. John Carpenter, Dean of Academic Resources Administration. To inform minorities of academic scholarships and financial aid available other than loans, a public awareness campaign is being kicked-off by the University and the City Commissioner's Office to inform high school students and those with an associate degree from community colleges of the financial resources now available as well as access to real scientific research at an undergraduate level. The Open House includes a Chat with the Deans, -- Saturday, February 28 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at the Youth Center, 3333 South Miami Avenue, next to the La Salle High School and Ermita de la Caridad grounds.
The Fellows Program is research-based, something that makes St. Thomas University stand-out from other higher education institutions. With prestigious faculty members who engage in spinal cord research, microbiology, plant growth and aquatic habitat laboratories, students now have an experience unlike anything else they encountered before. With first-hand discovery they start thinking like scientists. They are assigned a personal academic advisor and have the opportunity to work on publishable research along with faculty.
"St. Thomas is addressing affordability concerns at a time of national debt. Commissioner Regalado, whose daughter is a Law School alumna, has been quite supportive in reaching out to City of Miami's constituents to let them know of the value of a private university with the small-class competitive edge: building leadership and future career placement," says Marivi Prado, Chief Marketing Officer of the institution. "South Florida has many bright students who may live in inner cities and low-income neighborhoods. The economy calls for university staff to reach out to struggling families, working actual figures side by side, with participating deans chatting with students about online programs, certificates and degrees most likely to land jobs."
St. Thomas University is a national leader in Intercultural Human Rights and Sports Administration. Unique degrees and programs include Environmental Justice, Homeland Security and Terrorism Control, graduate specializations in Hispanic and Electronic Media as well as in Art Management, an undergraduate internship at the United Nations and an online, fast-track Masters in Professional Studies, which has made career advancement possible to many in the public sector. Teachers and school systems' administrators looking for a job or career advancement can contemplate a doctoral degree in Education without the time-consuming thesis requirement.
